Jacob Bruun Larsen made a significant impact upon his return to Borussia Dortmund, scoring a late equalizer to secure a 1-1 draw for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Dortmund seemed on track for their seventh league victory after Gio Reyna netted his first goal of the season. However, Bruun Larsen, who came on as a substitute, found the net in the first minute of stoppage time, capitalizing on a lapse in Dortmund’s defense following a cross from Haris Tabaković.
The 26-year-old Bruun Larsen, who played for Dortmund from 2015 to 2020 and had a brief stint at Stuttgart, placed his shot inside the left post without celebrating, although his teammates did. Reflecting on his performance, he remarked, “If I’d played from the start, maybe it would have been two goals.”
Reyna opened the scoring after halftime, chesting down a clearance before firing the ball into the top right corner. The 22-year-old American made his first start of the season in Dortmund’s recent 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, and coach Nuri Sahin rewarded him with another starting position just four days later.
In the first half, Serhou Guirassy believed he had won a penalty after being slightly touched by Brazilian defender Arthur Chaves. However, referee Harm Osmers reversed his decision after reviewing video footage, and Guirassy narrowly avoided a booking for diving. Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck played the entire match despite appearing to sustain a serious injury against Barcelona.
Following this draw, Dortmund fell to eighth place in the league standings, having dropped points for the eighth time in 14 matches.
Stuttgart Climbs to Sixth with Win Over Heidenheim
In an earlier match, Stuttgart secured a 3-1 victory against Heidenheim, moving up to sixth place in the Bundesliga. After a challenging start to both the league and Champions League, Stuttgart has now achieved four consecutive wins across all competitions, scoring at least three goals in each match.
Heidenheim, facing the consequences of their promotion success last season that led to a Conference League qualification, now finds themselves in the relegation zone after suffering seven defeats across all competitions.
Leipzig Rebounds with Win Over Frankfurt
Loïs Openda led RB Leipzig to a 2-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in their first match since being eliminated from the Champions League. Openda scored in the 51st minute after Christoph Baumgartner headed on a corner, helping Leipzig secure back-to-back wins over Frankfurt in league and cup play. This victory came after Leipzig’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Aston Villa, which ended their Champions League ambitions after a winless run in Europe.
