Two weeks after former UTA volleyball head coach J.T. Wenger resigned to become the head coach at Gonzaga University, sophomore outside hitter Sjakkie Donkers made the decision to transfer as well.
Wenger announced Donkers as his first signee on Friday after taking the reins at Gonzaga, according to a press release from the university.
“I am excited to add Sjakkie to the Gonzaga volleyball program,” Wenger said. “She brings a competitive attitude and volleyball skills that will make an immediate impact. Sjakkie is a great teammate, and I look forward to welcoming her to Spokane.”
Donkers, the reigning Western Athletic Conference co-freshman of the year, played a key role in UTA’s historic season, which included a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She finished the season with 289 kills, second only to graduate outside hitter Brianna Ford, and averaged 2.98 kills per set.
Reflecting on her season, Donkers recalled the special moment of playing in the NCAA tournament against the University of Southern California. Despite the loss, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “I am thankful for the team, the coaches, the staff, and the fans,” Donkers said. “Everybody made me feel like I was home away from home.”
Donkers’ strong relationship with Wenger played a significant role in her decision to transfer. “He creates a good team culture, and I enjoyed every second of working with him at UTA,” she said.
After Wenger’s resignation, Donkers entered the transfer portal, seeking to take her game to the next level. She is excited about the opportunity to continue her development at Gonzaga.
