The defending champions kicked off their campaign at home on Friday in Nebraska. They played against the Atlanta Vibe in a match that set a new attendance record for professional volleyball in the U.S., with 13,486 fans in the stands.

Boosted by the support of their home crowd and a standout performance from outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller, who scored 22 points, the Supernovas celebrated their 2024 title by raising the championship banner. They defeated the Vibe 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13) in a thrilling match.

Two days later, the Supernovas traveled to face the Grand Rapids Rise and earned another victory, winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22). Outside hitter Reagan Cooper led the team with 18 points, two more than Nuneviller.

“We showed that we like to fight,” said head coach Laura ‘Bird’ Kuhn. “We battled on the road, and that’s a great win. We have many challenges ahead, but finishing this match 3-0 on the road was huge.”

Ignite Start Strong in League Debut

The Indy Ignite, a new team in the Pro Volleyball Federation this year, had an impressive start. In their debut match on Saturday, they came from behind to defeat the Orlando Valkyries 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21) in front of their home crowd.

Outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh and opposite Azhani Tealer led the team’s victory with 27 and 22 points, respectively.

“It was such an incredible environment,” said setter Sydney Hilley. “We were nervous at first, wanting to show the crowd some great volleyball. But we came back strong after the first set, and I’m so proud of this team.”

Other Results from Opening Weekend

The Atlanta Vibe, Orlando Valkyries, San Diego Mojo, and Vegas Thrill all played two matches over the weekend, each recording one win and one loss. The Columbus Fury, who lost their only match, and the Grand Rapids Rise, who lost both of their matches, are still looking for their first wins.

The second week of action will feature eight matches from Thursday to Sunday.
