Coach Faces Tough Decisions on UST Line-Up for UAAP Volleyball

University of Santo Tomas (UST) head coach Kungfu Reyes is preparing to make tough decisions on the composition of the Golden Tigresses’ line-up for the upcoming UAAP women’s volleyball season.

UST had a strong buildup to Season 81, finishing second in the Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam last December. The Tigresses faced the University of the Philippines in the final, but fell short in four sets: 21-25, 25-16, 23-25, 19-25. Despite the defeat, the Tigresses’ potential was clear, as Eya Laure and Milena Alessandrini combined for 27 points, with veterans like Tin Francisco and Dimdim Pacres also stepping up.

“We are still in the process,” Reyes said after the match. “We had 10 rookies and four veterans, and it wasn’t bad. We even won the Uni Games with a different set of players.”

Reyes emphasized that the team had gained valuable insight into both their strengths and weaknesses.

With the preseason performances in mind, Reyes is anticipating difficult decisions as he narrows down the final line-up.

“The collaboration among the coaches is important in determining each player’s strengths and weaknesses in specific positions,” Reyes said. “We are working to fit the players into the 14 spots on the roster.”

While the UST line-up is still being finalized, key players like Sisi Rondina, Alessandrini (the reigning UAAP Rookie of the Year), and Eya Laure, the team’s top recruit, are expected to secure spots.

“Whoever deserves it the most will make the final cut,” Reyes said.

This approach applies even to EJ Laure, the older sister of Eya, who missed all of Season 80 due to a shoulder injury. Reyes noted that EJ’s return after Christmas break will be crucial.

“With EJ, we can already see her progress. Her performance during the Christmas break will be decisive for the final selection,” Reyes said.

The Tigresses have returned to practice, but Reyes pointed out that despite their strong preseason, the team still has a lot of work ahead of them.

“Every team has gotten stronger,” Reyes said. “We still need to work hard.”
