Fabio Fognini has withdrawn from the 2025 Australian Open due to a foot injury, opening the door for Francesco Passaro to step in as a lucky loser. Passaro will now make his Grand Slam debut against Grigor Dimitrov.
Fognini, who suffered the injury during the qualifying rounds in Adelaide, had to retire from his match against Benjamin Bonzi last week due to visible pain. The withdrawal means Passaro, who lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final qualifying round, gets a chance to compete at the Australian Open.
With Fognini’s absence, the Italian contingent is now reduced to 13 players. Passaro will look to make the most of his opportunity as he faces Dimitrov in the first round.
