All Blacks fullback Shaun Stevenson has joined the growing list of southern hemisphere players moving to Japan.
The Chiefs star has received a short-term release from New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and his franchise, allowing him to join the Kubota Spears in Japan. The Spears are currently ranked fifth in the Japan League One standings.
Stevenson is expected to return to New Zealand for Round 4 of Super Rugby Pacific to play for the Chiefs.
The 28-year-old’s move follows months of speculation about his future, including reports that he had been offered a significant deal by the Japanese club in the final year of his NZR contract.
In Japan, Stevenson will reunite with former North Harbour teammate Bryn Hall, who also plays for the Spears. Additionally, former All Blacks defence coach Scott McLeod is part of the club’s coaching staff.
Despite concerns over more players heading to Japan for higher pay, NZR General Manager of Professional Rugby and Performance Chris Lendrum described the move as a positive outcome for all involved.
“We’ve had ongoing discussions about Shaun’s future and have come to an agreement that takes into account both his personal circumstances and his commitments to the Chiefs and Super Rugby,” Lendrum said.
“Shaun has spent 10 years as a professional rugby player in New Zealand and has reached the top of the sport. He has always been a dedicated Chiefs player and remains committed to the team for the upcoming season.”
