San Diego Wave FC has announced the signing of Nigerian striker Chiamaka Okwuchukwu from Rivers Angels FC of the Nigerian Women’s Premier League. The 19-year-old has signed a one-year contract for the 2025 season.
“We are very pleased to welcome Chiamaka to the Wave family,” said Camille Ashton, the club’s Sporting Director and General Manager. “Her addition highlights our commitment to bringing in talented young players. We believe her skills will fit well with our attacking lineup and make a significant impact on the team.”
Okwuchukwu, the current Confederation of African Football’s Young Women’s Player of the Year, showcased her talent at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia last year, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
She made her national team debut in 2022 at just 16 years old, helping Nigeria remain unbeaten in the group stage of the competition.
Okwuchukwu’s arrival is part of San Diego Wave’s roster overhaul after a disappointing 2024 season. The team has also brought in French players Delphine Cascarino and Perle Morroni during the Olympic break.
Other international players on the team include Maria Sanchez from Mexico, Kailen Sheridan and Mya Jones from Canada, Hanna Lundkvist from Sweden, and Kaitlin Torpey from Australia.
Okwuchukwu becomes part of a growing group of Nigerian players in the NWSL, joining the likes of veteran Asisat Oshoala.
