Alcaraz Dominates to Reach Third Round

Carlos Alcaraz, a four-time Grand Slam winner, delivered a dominant performance at the Australian Open on Wednesday, dropping just five games in a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. The match, which lasted just 81 minutes, saw the Spanish third seed race into the third round.

“The less time you spend on court in the Grand Slams, especially early on, the better,” Alcaraz said. “Physically, I’m feeling great, and I was focused on spending as little time as possible on the court.”

Alcaraz, who won Roland Garros and Wimbledon last year, is yet to make it past the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park. He aims to become the youngest men’s winner in Australia since Novak Djokovic claimed his first title in 2008. If successful, he would also become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.

The 21-year-old came out firing after a straight-set win in the first round, overwhelming the 65th-ranked Nishioka. The Japanese player struggled from the start, winning just two of 16 baseline points in the opening set, and only four points overall.

Alcaraz made improvements to his serve in the off-season and is using a lighter racquet in Melbourne. His efforts were apparent as he hit five aces in the second set and won 91 percent of his first-serve points, leaving Nishioka with little chance.

“I’m really happy with the serve today. It’s something I worked on in the pre-season,” Alcaraz said. “I struggled a bit in the first round, but I practiced more yesterday. I’m glad it worked well today, and I hope it improves even more in the next round.”

Nishioka tried to rally in the third set, but the disparity in skill was too great, and Alcaraz sealed the win without difficulty.
