An Auckland property with a $6.2 million RV backs onto Cornwall Park, offering a unique connection to tennis and family life.
When Ranald and Cyndy McDonald were house-hunting in 1993, their young sons were active, and Ranald wanted to embrace his passion for tennis. Cyndy had a clear vision for the ideal home. Upon arriving at 13 Maungakiekie Avenue, she knew it was perfect for the family.
The house had been recently modified under the guidance of renowned Auckland architect Terry Hitchcock. The previous owners, both doctors, had moved the house forward by 4.5 meters to install a full-sized, flood-lit AstroTurf tennis court.
Ranald, an avid tennis player, estimates he’s played 6,000 games over almost 30 years with only one interruption—a knee replacement. Meanwhile, their sons enjoyed the swimming pool and access to Cornwall Park through a private gate. Cyndy, who has spent three decades in the Christmas business, was also content in the home.
“The previous owners kept many of the charming 1920s features, like elegant light fittings, in the original lounge and dining areas. They added a Hitchcock-designed wing at the back, which includes a modern kitchen overlooking the tennis court framed by ivy, as well as a family and dining room perfect for entertaining,” Cyndy says.
Upstairs, the home offers four spacious bedrooms, a library/living room, and a family bathroom, with an ensuite in the primary suite. The walk-in linen cupboard has been convenient, and the color scheme throughout the home is calm and inspired by nature.
The property also includes a standalone pool house. Once a garage, it was relocated when the tennis court was added. Situated behind the pool, the pool house is sunny, well-equipped with a kitchenette and bathroom, and ideal for guests. The space features Scandinavian-style décor with light-colored wood paneling and even has a sauna.
As Ranald and Cyndy prepare to downsize, they feel both excited and sentimental about leaving their cherished home. The property is set to go on the market in February, and they hope the sounds of children playing will once again fill the space.
“We’ve had the best years living here – with an open door to all!” they say.
Dean Tuffley from Ray White, who will be marketing the property, notes that homes on Maungakiekie Avenue always attract significant interest.
“Freehold parkside homes rarely become available here, and I’m excited to launch this beautiful property in February 2025,” he says. “The location is fantastic—sitting on the highest point in the street, this north-facing home offers views across to the Remuera ridge and beyond.”
13 Maungakiekie Avenue in Greenlane, Auckland, has a 2021 RV of $6.2 million. According to OneRoof data, the property last sold in 1994 for $1.225 million.
