George Mason’s 2025 season began with a 0-3 defeat against #17 UC San Diego.
In the first set, UC San Diego dominated early, while a service error allowed George Mason to score their first point of the season. Georgi Zahariev recorded the Patriots’ first service ace, but UC San Diego maintained control, winning the first set 25-15. Despite some strong moments from Giomar Collazo Santiago, including two impressive kills, the Tritons led throughout.
Troy McDonald replaced Zahariev as setter in the second set. UC San Diego’s service errors gave the Patriots opportunities, and George Mason briefly gained the lead with key blocks from McDonald and a service ace from Liam French. However, the Tritons regained control and won the second set 25-18.
Zahariev returned to the setter position in the third set. Alexander Lillie and Stef Kins made their NCAA debuts during the set, which saw both teams battling for the lead. After a media timeout at 15-14, UC San Diego took over and closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
