The Houston Texans announced on Tuesday that they have waived wide receiver Diontae Johnson after a short stint with the team. Johnson, who had previously been released by the Baltimore Ravens this season, played only two games for Houston. His brief tenure included a single reception for 12 yards during the Texans’ wild-card playoff victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.
Johnson’s journey to Houston has been tumultuous. After being traded from the Carolina Panthers to the Ravens, he appeared in four games for Baltimore before being suspended for refusing to enter a game, ultimately leading to his release on December 20. Over his six-year career, which began with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnson has accumulated a total of 4,726 receiving yards.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed confidence in signing Johnson when he joined the team in late December, despite his troubled past. However, on Tuesday, Ryans did not elaborate on the decision to waive Johnson as the team shifts its focus to preparing for the upcoming divisional-round game against the Kansas City Chiefs. In addition to Johnson’s release, the Texans placed rookie tight end Cade Stover on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury that will require surgery. Stover, a fourth-round draft pick from Ohio State, contributed four receptions for 28 yards in the playoff game against the Chargers.
