In a dramatic finish, Missouri upset No. 4 Florida, with a key 3-pointer from Missouri guard Caleb Grill putting the Tigers ahead 78-71 with 2:23 left. However, replays showed Grill might have stepped on the line during the shot, which would have reduced the basket to a two-pointer. Despite the possible error, the officials did not review the play, and Florida’s coaching staff did not request one.
Earlier in the game, Florida coach Todd Golden had asked for a review, which resulted in a change to a foul call against Missouri’s Grill, preventing Florida forward Thomas Haugh from fouling out. Several stoppages occurred late in the game for reviews of potential goaltending and a 10-second violation, but the controversial 3-pointer was not among them.
“We weren’t made aware of it,” Golden said. “I didn’t see it. I should have gone to the refs, but I missed it.”
The Gators lost 83-82 after Missouri’s Alijah Martin nailed a 3-pointer with just 0.1 seconds remaining. However, the missed call was not the only factor in Florida’s defeat. The Gators struggled in the first half, trailing 50-34 at the break. Missouri outscored Florida 18-6 in points off turnovers and dominated 35-9 in bench points. Grill led the way with 22 points off the bench.
“You can’t afford to take a half off and win an SEC game,” Florida guard Will Richard said.
