Woodbridge described the young Spaniard as the most entertaining player to emerge since Roger Federer, highlighting Alcaraz’s unique blend of skills and charisma on the court. “I think this is his best chance so far,” Woodbridge remarked, noting the challenges Alcaraz faced in previous years, including an injury that kept him from competing in Australia after his first Grand Slam victory at the 2022 US Open, and a lack of tactical clarity last year without his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Woodbridge expressed confidence in Alcaraz’s potential to pose a significant threat to his competitors this year. “He’s the most fun player to watch after Roger Federer,” he stated, emphasizing Alcaraz’s combination of flair reminiscent of Federer, the athleticism of Novak Djokovic, and the tenacity characteristic of Rafael Nadal. Woodbridge identified Alcaraz as his top pick for the tournament, suggesting that a victory at the Australian Open could set the stage for him to achieve the remarkable feat of winning all four Grand Slam titles at such a young age.
The former champion also reflected on the aspects of Alcaraz’s game that need refinement. “One of the joys of watching him is that he has so many options,” Woodbridge noted, while also expressing hope that Alcaraz would develop greater discipline in his play. He pointed out that, at times, Alcaraz’s style allows opponents to regain momentum in matches.
