Mainz Signs US Midfielder Maloney from Heidenheim

U.S. midfielder Lennard Maloney has officially signed with Mainz from Bundesliga rival Heidenheim, following a period of uncertainty that saw him dropped from Heidenheim’s squad last month after expressing a desire to leave the club. The 25-year-old midfielder had previously announced his intention to join Mainz once his contract expired at the end of the season, and a deal between the two clubs was reached on Tuesday.

Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert praised Maloney’s abilities, stating, “Maloney has been able to prove himself in the Bundesliga over the last year and a half. His preferred position is as a number six, and as a player, he’s the perfect fit for Mainz 05. He brings a strong mentality, a willingness to run hard, and excels in winning challenges and aerial duels. Lennard’s warm and open personality will help him integrate easily into our squad.” Maloney has signed a contract that will keep him at Mainz until 2028.

The move comes as Heidenheim struggles in the league, currently occupying a relegation playoff spot after 18 rounds, while Mainz sits in sixth place, aiming for European qualification. Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt previously cited Maloney’s lack of commitment as the reason for his exclusion from the team, emphasizing the need for players who are fully focused on the club’s interests. Maloney, born in Berlin, has represented the United States twice in 2023, marking his growing presence on the international stage.
