In a significant development for Uzbek football, national team coach Srečko Katanec announced his resignation on Wednesday, citing health issues as the reason for his departure. This decision comes at a crucial time as Uzbekistan is on the verge of qualifying for the men’s World Cup for the first time in its history.
The Uzbekistan Football Federation released a statement acknowledging Katanec’s regret over his inability to continue his duties in a professional capacity due to his current health condition. While specific details regarding the 61-year-old Slovenian coach’s health were not disclosed, the federation extended its best wishes for his recovery and future endeavors in coaching.
Under Katanec’s leadership since 2021, Uzbekistan has made significant strides in its World Cup qualifying campaign, currently holding second place in their group with matches set to resume in March. Iran leads the group, with only four rounds remaining, and the top two teams will secure spots in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Katanec’s tenure also saw the team reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asian Cup, marking the nation’s best chance to qualify for a World Cup since gaining independence after the Soviet Union’s dissolution. Notably, the upcoming World Cup will feature eight guaranteed spots for Asian teams, a substantial increase from the four available in the previous 32-team format. Katanec’s coaching career includes stints with five national teams, notably leading Slovenia to its first tournament appearance at the 2000 European Championship.
