Lorenzo Sonego has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career, achieving this milestone at the age of 29 during the Australian Open in Melbourne. The Italian player showcased his skill and determination, defeating American teenager Learnen Tien in a four-set match that concluded with scores of 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The match, held at John Cain Arena, lasted two hours and 25 minutes, marking a significant achievement for Sonego, who has been enjoying his best performance in a Major event to date.
Sonego’s strong serving was a key factor in his victory, winning 57 of 63 points on his first serve. Although he struggled with his second serve, Tien faced even greater difficulties, converting only one of his four break points and getting broken five times from 11 opportunities. Throughout the match, Sonego displayed impressive shot-making, hitting 58 winners while committing 34 unforced errors. The Italian excelled in short rallies, dominating with an 81-48 lead in points won in exchanges of four strokes or fewer.
The match began with Sonego taking control early, breaking Tien’s serve in the second game after the American’s double fault. He maintained his momentum, closing the first set 6-3 despite facing some challenges with set points. In the second set, Sonego’s flawless play allowed him to secure two breaks, extending his lead and putting him on the verge of victory. Although Tien managed to claim a set in the third, Sonego responded with a dominant fourth set, breaking Tien early and finishing the match with an unreturned serve on match point. This victory propels Sonego into the quarter-finals, where he will continue to pursue his Grand Slam aspirations.
