The win came after a busy week for the team, which had started with a 36-26 win over Basalt on Jan. 10 in their first 4A Western Slope League game. They faced a tough 56-53 loss against Grand Junction on Tuesday, followed by a hard-fought 53-49 overtime victory against Middle Park on Friday.

Back at home on Saturday, the Bulldogs quickly took control of the game against Rifle. After Rifle’s early free throw, Moffat County led the rest of the way, going into halftime with a commanding 35-11 lead.

“We’re just trying to keep improving and using these games to prepare for tougher competition,” said junior Bella Vanzo. “I think we’ve all gotten better at making plays and taking advantage of our defense.”

Though Rifle showed more fight in the second half, Moffat County’s starters maintained the lead. The team hit six three-pointers during the game, with senior Ariana Buchanan sinking three of them to lead the scoring alongside Adams, each finishing with 15 points.

Head coach Heath Peper praised Adams for her improvement at the free-throw line, where she went a perfect 6-for-6 on Saturday. “She’s been struggling with free throws, but she made two big ones to send us to overtime against Middle Park,” Peper said. “Now it looks like she’s got it all figured out.”

Peper also highlighted the team’s increased physicality as the season progresses, even though they are a guard-heavy team. “We’re getting more physical in the post, and that’s making things easier for us.”

With a 6-6 overall record, the Moffat County girls are preparing for a key matchup against Delta, a team that has been a tough competitor in the league. This will be Peper’s first time leading the team against Delta, but he understands the importance of the game.

“It starts on Friday—the competition for the league championship. That’s our goal this season,” Peper said.
