Will Mahomes Prompt NFL to Tackle Flopping

NFL officials faced intense scrutiny following the divisional round games that saw the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders advance to the conference championships. While several penalties were called during these critical matchups, one notable non-call could have significant implications for the league’s approach to player conduct, particularly regarding flopping. ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman highlighted this issue during the Chiefs’ 23-14 victory over the Houston Texans, suggesting that the NFL should consider adopting stricter measures against flopping, similar to those in the NBA and NHL.

The controversy centered around a play involving Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. During a pivotal drive, Mahomes executed a late slide that resulted in a controversial unnecessary roughness penalty against two Texans defenders. Following this, he appeared to exaggerate a hit from linebacker Henry To’oTo’o in an attempt to draw another flag. However, the officiating crew, led by referee Clay Martin, did not respond to Mahomes’ dramatic fall, much to Aikman’s dismay. Aikman criticized the quarterback’s actions, stating, “He’s trying to draw the penalty. Rather than just run out of bounds, he slows down,” reflecting the frustrations of defensive players who feel that such tactics undermine the integrity of the game.

The officiating decisions during the game drew further criticism, with Aikman vehemently opposing the roughing-the-passer call against To’oTo’o, which he deemed unwarranted. He emphasized that Mahomes, having become a runner, should not have received the same protections afforded to quarterbacks in the pocket. Following the game, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his team’s awareness of potential bias in officiating, stating, “We knew going into today it was us versus everybody.” As discussions about the officiating and potential rule changes unfold, Aikman and ESPN’s rules analyst Russell Yurk both concurred that the league must address these issues in the offseason to ensure fair play and uphold the standards of the game.
