Kupp Uncertain About Future After Rams Season

Following the Los Angeles Rams’ disappointing playoff exit in Philadelphia, wide receiver Cooper Kupp finds himself contemplating the future of his eight-year career with the team. Although Kupp is under contract for two more seasons, the significant financial implications of his deal may lead the Rams to consider parting ways with their Super Bowl 56 MVP. “Who knows what’s going to happen?” Kupp remarked on Monday as the Rams wrapped up their season. “A lot of stuff is out of my control. I would love to be in LA, but I don’t know what that’s going to look like.”

Kupp’s uncertainty stems in part from trade discussions earlier in the season, particularly after the Rams’ rocky start of 1-4. During that time, the team fielded inquiries about Kupp, who was recovering from injuries, as they contemplated moving his hefty three-year, $80.1 million contract. The financial burden of Kupp’s deal is considerable; he is set to take up nearly $30 million in cap space for the 2025 season, but the Rams could save roughly two-thirds of that amount by releasing him. Kupp, who will turn 32 next season, is aware that the Rams’ front office is not known for sentimentality, having previously traded or released star players like Jared Goff and Todd Gurley before their extensions began.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Kupp is adamant that he will continue playing football next season. “I feel like I’ve got a lot of good football left in me,” he stated confidently. Reflecting on the recently concluded season, Kupp expressed frustration over his performance, which fell short of his high standards, recording 67 catches for 710 yards and six touchdowns. He acknowledged a desire for a more significant role in the offense, particularly in the latter part of the season. “There’s frustration there, and I want to be able to feel like I’m impacting games,” Kupp said, emphasizing his commitment to executing his responsibilities effectively. As the Rams look ahead, Kupp’s future remains a pivotal topic in their offseason strategy, alongside key decisions regarding quarterback Matthew Stafford and several impending free agents.
