The Indianapolis Colts have initiated a significant defensive overhaul following a disappointing season, marked by their failure to reach the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. The team confirmed the hiring of Lou Anarumo as their new defensive coordinator, according to a source who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity due to the pending official announcement. Anarumo takes over from Gus Bradley, whose leadership faced intense scrutiny after the defense’s lackluster performance.
The Colts’ defensive struggles were highlighted by Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who described the unit as the worst he has experienced since joining the team in 2020. General manager Chris Ballard acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, attributing part of the blame for their 8-9 record to inadequate defensive strategies and player acquisitions. “That falls on all of us,” Ballard stated in a press conference shortly after the decision to part ways with Bradley. He emphasized the need for improvement, both in terms of player recruitment and on-field execution.
Anarumo arrives in Indianapolis after a six-year tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he gained recognition for his role in leading the team to the Super Bowl in 2022. However, after a disappointing 2024 season, he was let go. As the Colts look to revamp their defensive strategy, they have already announced changes to their coaching staff, including the departures of defensive backs coach Ron Milus and linebackers coach Richard Smith. With key free agents such as linebacker E.J. Speed and safety Julian Blackmon on the horizon, Ballard expressed a commitment to reevaluating their approach to free agency. He acknowledged the need to better identify and secure impactful players, while Buckner, a team captain, vowed to assist in recruiting new talent to help the Colts return to playoff contention.
