Indian badminton players Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly have made history by reaching World No. 9 in the BWF World Rankings for women’s doubles. This achievement marks the highest-ever ranking for an Indian women’s doubles team, surpassing the previous record held by Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta.
In 2015, Ashwini and Jwala became the first Indian women’s doubles pair to break into the top 10, reaching No. 10. Now, Gayatri and Treesa have set a new benchmark for Indian women’s doubles, showcasing the rising talent in the sport.
The duo’s breakthrough came after winning their first title at the Syed Modi India International in December. They also impressed at the BWF World Tour Finals, finishing the year with a career-high ranking of No. 11. Despite narrowly missing out on Olympic qualification last year, they rebounded with strong performances at the Macau Open and the Canada Open. A recent quarterfinal finish at the Malaysia Open secured their place in the top 10.
The ongoing India Open Super 750 in New Delhi presents another chance for the pair to solidify their standing and aim for even greater achievements.
