Lakshya Sen Reaches Quarterfinals; PV Sindhu Exits at China Masters

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen advanced to the quarterfinals of the China Masters Super 750 tournament, while PV Sindhu’s campaign ended in the second round on Thursday.

Lakshya, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, displayed dominant form in his second-round match. He defeated Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke 21-6, 21-18 in just 46 minutes. Lakshya will now face either Japan’s Takuma Obayashi or third-seeded Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the next round.

Unfortunately, Sindhu’s run came to an end after a tough three-set loss to Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min. The World No. 19 Sindhu had previously won her first-round match against Busanan Ongbamrungphan. However, she fell short against Min, losing 16-21, 21-17, 21-23 in a match lasting 69 minutes. This was Sindhu’s first loss to Min in six meetings.

In women’s singles, Anupama Upadhyaya and Malvika Bansod also bowed out in the second round. Anupama was defeated 7-21, 14-21 by Japan’s Natsuki Nidaira, while Malvika was beaten 9-21, 9-21 by eighth-seeded Supanida Katethong of Thailand.

In women’s doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, ranked No. 18, were outclassed by the second-seeded Chinese pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning. The Indian duo lost 16-11, 11-21 in just 43 minutes.

However, defending champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarterfinals in men’s doubles. They won 21-19, 21-15 against Denmark’s Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Soggard. The Asian Games gold medalists will now face Denmark’s second-seeded duo, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.

Lakshya Sen played aggressively from the start, securing an easy win in the first game. His sharp net play and smart court coverage allowed him to dominate, taking the game 21-6. The second game was more competitive, with both players tied at 10 points early on. Lakshya then edged ahead with strong smashes and excellent net pickups. After saving two match points, Lakshya closed the match 21-18 with two powerful smashes.

PV Sindhu vs. Yeo Jia Min

Sindhu faced a tough challenge from Yeo Jia Min in a closely contested match. The first game saw Min take advantage of Sindhu’s errors and win 21-16. Sindhu fought back in the second game, taking a 17-13 lead, but Min equalized. The third game was a thriller, with Sindhu holding a 13-9 lead before Min mounted a comeback. Min capitalized on Sindhu’s fatigue to win 23-21, securing the match in her favor.
