Jannik Sinner has advanced to his second consecutive Australian Open semi-final after a dominant performance against Alex de Minaur. Just two days prior, the world No. 1 faced health issues during his match against Holger Rune, prompting his coach, Simone Vagnozzi, to shed light on Sinner’s condition. Despite experiencing a headache and stomach problems that forced him to skip warm-ups, Sinner managed to secure victory over Rune in four sets. With his health restored, Sinner showcased his best form against de Minaur, winning decisively with scores of 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.
On Tuesday, Sinner took a day off to recover, which proved beneficial as he returned to the court for the night session at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday. Facing de Minaur, the Italian displayed exceptional skill and composure, overpowering his opponent in under two hours. While many expected de Minaur to pose a significant challenge, he struggled throughout the match, serving at just 51% and succumbing to the pressure exerted by Sinner. The defending champion capitalized on six of ten break points and delivered 27 winners against 19 unforced errors, solidifying his position as a strong contender for the title.
Vagnozzi commented on Sinner’s recent health scare, noting that while the conditions during the match against Rune were challenging, Sinner managed to adapt effectively. “He had a headache and stomach issues in the morning. We chose to skip the warm-up to preserve energy,” Vagnozzi explained. “However, it was nothing to worry about. Jannik is learning quickly from defeats and mistakes. He felt better yesterday, and the favorable weather conditions today contributed to his performance.” With this victory, Sinner is set to face Ben Shelton in the semi-finals, continuing his pursuit of the Australian Open title.
