Malaysia’s Struggles Against Vietnam: Ex-Goalkeeper Azmin Azram Explains Why OR

Former Malaysian goalkeeper Azmin Azram Abdul Aziz has long wondered why Malaysia struggles to compete with Vietnam in major football tournaments. After coaching in Hanoi, he found the answer.

Speaking on the Julang podcast, which aired on Feb 26, Azmin emphasized Vietnam’s strong national spirit. “Their pride and determination are incredible,” he said, thumping his chest for emphasis.

Azmin, who helped Cong An Hanoi FC win the V.League 1 title in 2023, praised the Vietnamese players’ relentless work ethic. “At times, I asked myself, ‘Do they ever stop working? When do they even have lunch?’” he recalled.

One key factor, he noted, is Vietnam’s commitment to youth development. Talented children join football academies as early as age 10, living and training in top facilities like the AFC-recognized PVF Academy.

“I once asked a parent why they sent their child there,” Azmin shared. “The parent simply said, ‘My son loves football. So I told him, if you truly love it, prove it.’”

Players at the academy receive a well-rounded education, attending the nearby Vinschool international school and taking English classes at night. They also benefit from a strict nutrition program.

Azmin highlighted the intense fighting spirit of young Vietnamese players. “They give everything on the field. That’s why we struggle to beat them.”

He also described PVF Academy as a world-class facility, featuring multiple well-maintained fields and a gymnasium as large as a football pitch.

Born in Kamunting and raised in Sentul, Azmin began his football career with Kuala Lumpur FA in 1993 and played for Malaysia from 1994 to 2005. He faced elite teams like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Brazil.

His most memorable moment came against Brazil at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, where he faced legends such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cafu, and Roberto Carlos. Despite being constantly tested, Azmin managed to deny a Ronaldinho free kick, though Brazil ultimately won 4-0.
