Top seed Viktor Axelsen overcame a determined challenge from Loh Kean Yew to win the 2025 BWF German Open men’s singles final in Mülheim an der Ruhr on Sunday (March 2).
The Danish two-time Olympic champion had to rally in the first game after a strong start from Loh, who was aiming for his first BWF World Tour title in nearly a year. The Singaporean led 8-3 and later 18-16, but Axelsen surged late to take the opening game 21-19.
Axelsen appeared in full control in the second game, racing to a 6-0 lead and later extending it to 15-7. At 20-10, he had 10 match points, seemingly on the verge of a comfortable victory. However, Loh staged a remarkable comeback, winning eight consecutive points to narrow the gap to 20-18.
Axelsen finally converted his ninth match point, securing a 21-19, 21-18 victory. The win marks his second title of the year, following his India Open triumph in January.
For Loh, the result was bittersweet. The 2021 world champion reached his first final since winning the Madrid Spain Masters in March 2024. He will now look to build on this performance in upcoming tournaments.
Both players now shift focus to the prestigious All England Open in two weeks.
