Navy Opens 7s Season in Commanding Fashion, Sweeps Frostbite 7s

The Navy women’s rugby team kicked off its 7s season in dominant style, winning all four of its matches at the Frostbite 7s tournament in Landisville, Pa., on Sunday. The Midshipmen opened the day with a 20-5 victory over Binghamton before shutting out Virginia (44-0), Stony Brook (31-0), and West Virginia (24-0).

“It was a great day, and I was very pleased with how the team performed,” said head coach Murph McCarthy. “We still have some work to do with our younger players adjusting to the 7s game, but overall, it was a solid start to the spring season.”

Match Results:

Navy 20, Binghamton 5
Catherine O’Hara set the tone early, scoring two tries in the first five minutes to give Navy a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Mia Young extended the advantage with a try just 47 seconds into the second half, while Ella Callahan sealed the win with another score in the 14th minute. Binghamton avoided a shutout with a late try in the 15th minute.

Navy 44, Virginia 0
Navy recorded its highest-scoring match of the day with a dominant 44-0 victory over Virginia. The Mids ran in nine tries, with Young, O’Hara, Ashley Spencer, and Lara Olmstead each scoring twice. Meagan Leitz added another try just over three minutes into the match.

Navy 31, Stony Brook 0
After a slow start, Navy’s offense exploded in the second half, scoring three tries and converting three kicks to secure a 31-0 shutout over Stony Brook. Young contributed 11 points, including two conversion kicks and her fourth try of the day. Callahan scored the only try of the first half, while Caroline Shegogue and Hannah Brink added their first tries of the tournament in the second.

Navy 24, West Virginia 0
The Mids capped off the day with their third consecutive shutout, defeating West Virginia 24-0. O’Hara opened the scoring four minutes into the match, with Young converting for a 7-0 lead. Meagan Alvarez, the team’s leading scorer in the fall, added her first try of the spring season. Brink, Alexis Rohrbach, and Rose Rode each contributed a try to close out the commanding performance.

Navy will return to action in two weeks, hosting the Navy 7s tournament on Sunday, March 23, at the Prusmack Rugby Center in Annapolis, Md.
