The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over McNeese in a Southland Conference (SLC) match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Monday.
The Vaqueros (4-3, 2-0 SLC) showcased strong net play and effective returns to counter McNeese’s aggressive attack. In doubles action, senior Kristal Dule and sophomore Yaiza Vazquez delivered a solid performance on court two, winning 6-2 with minimal errors. On court one, freshman Mariia Bakhtina and sophomore Rhea Makesar battled in a close contest before pulling away in the final two games to claim a 6-4 victory.
Dule carried her momentum into singles, securing her second straight-set win with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 performance on court three against Ana Hollweg.
Bakhtina started strong on court six, cruising to a 6-0 first-set win and jumping ahead 3-0 in the second. Although McNeese’s Toffee Ghorab attempted a comeback, Bakhtina held firm to take the second set 6-2.
On court four, Vaqueros junior Joffe showed patience and resilience, winning a hard-fought first set 7-5 before carrying that momentum into a 6-2 second-set victory, clinching the match for UTRGV.
McNeese earned wins on courts one, two, and five, keeping the match competitive until the end.
Next, UTRGV will travel for its first SLC road trip, facing Northwestern State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
