Experienced lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto has secured his long-term future with the Queensland Reds and Wallabies, signing a contract extension through 2028. The deal ensures the 28-year-old forward will remain at Ballymore for at least three more seasons beyond the current campaign, providing a major boost to Australian rugby.
His re-signing follows that of Wallabies captain Harry Wilson and aligns with Australia’s preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil.
Salakaia-Loto, a powerful 125kg presence, made his Reds debut in 2016 at just 19 before earning his first Wallabies cap against South Africa in 2017. After spending seven seasons with Queensland, he broadened his rugby experience with England’s Northampton Saints (2022-23) and the Melbourne Rebels (2024).
Last year, he rejoined the Wallabies setup under coach Joe Schmidt, featuring in 11 of Australia’s 13 Tests. With 41 Test caps, 71 games for the Reds, and eight appearances for the Rebels, he is now one of the country’s most experienced forwards.
Returning to Ballymore with his young family ahead of the 2025 SMARTECH Super Rugby Pacific season, Salakaia-Loto expressed his excitement about the new chapter.
A Commitment to Reds and Wallabies Success
“Securing my future is massively important for me and my family, and it’s pretty cool that I get to continue my career here at the Reds,” Salakaia-Loto said.
“I feel like I’m only just getting started in the second chapter of my career, and my best rugby is ahead of me. Hopefully, I can continue earning the chance to wear the Reds and Wallabies jerseys.”
Born in Auckland and raised in western Sydney, Salakaia-Loto moved to Queensland as a teenager, where he developed through the Queensland Under-20s and Brisbane City pathways before establishing himself as a key player for the Reds.
With his future secured, the experienced lock is now focused on delivering strong performances for the Reds in the upcoming season, with the ultimate goal of earning further Wallabies selections.
