The Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) men’s tennis team secured a 5-2 victory over Furman on Tuesday at the FGCU Tennis Complex, overcoming an early deficit with dominant singles play.
Furman started strong by winning the doubles point, taking matches on courts two (7-5) and three (6-4). FGCU’s No. 1 duo, Hugo Magnusson and Jonathan Baron, managed a 6-4 victory, but Furman claimed the next two matches to secure the first point of the day.
Trailing 1-0, FGCU quickly bounced back in singles competition. Baron and Pablo Paternostro earned straight-set wins on courts two (6-4, 6-2) and four (6-2, 6-1), giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The momentum continued as Guglielmo Stefanacci dominated on court three, winning 6-3, 6-3. Stavros Hadjivarnava then clinched the match for FGCU with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 victory, ending the team’s five-match losing streak.
Magnusson added another win for FGCU, rallying from a set down to take his match 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, making it 5-1 Eagles. Furman’s only singles win came on court five in a three-set battle to close the day.
Next, FGCU will host VCU on Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m.
