Patriots Smash Record with 23-Run Inning, Dominating Holy Cross 26-6

George Mason’s baseball team set a new NCAA Division I record for the most runs scored in an inning, posting 23 runs in the bottom of the second en route to a 26-6 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

The Patriots’ 23 runs shattered the previous Division I record of 21, set by Penn State in 1983 and matched by Wichita State in 1984. During the historic second inning, 19 consecutive batters reached base, leading to 11 hits (six singles and five doubles), eight walks, and five hit batters.

The Patriots extended their winning streak to six games, having outscored their opponents 89-27 during the stretch. This victory was part of a season-high eight-game homestand, where George Mason won seven games. The team’s all-time record for runs in a game remains 36, set against Holy Cross in 1996.

Freshman Lucas Alberti, junior James Quinn-Irons, and sophomore Owen Hull each drove in four runs to lead the offense. Sophomore pitcher Ty Uchman earned his first career win after pitching two hitless innings.

The Patriots finished the game with 13 hits and 12 walks, adding to their dominance.

How It Happened

In the record-breaking second inning, George Mason sent 28 batters to the plate and faced five Holy Cross pitchers. Freshman catcher Andrew Raymond contributed a double, a walk, and three RBIs, while junior shortstop Owen Clyne doubled and drove in a run. Graduate first baseman Jonny Wall had a hit and walked twice, driving in one run and scoring three times.

Evan Blanchard, Drew Canody, Alberti, Hull, and Quinn-Irons all contributed with multiple hits and RBIs, further widening the lead. Sophomore Jake Butler, who started and ended the inning, was hit by a pitch twice and scored two runs.

The Patriots added three more runs in the fifth inning, with Quinn-Irons and Clyne each driving in a run.

Looking Ahead

George Mason (8-4) will now play three games at Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia. The Patriots face Georgetown on Friday, March 7, at noon, Longwood on Saturday, March 8, at 4 p.m., and Towson on Sunday, March 9, at 4 p.m.
