BYU basketball is on a hot streak, winning its seventh consecutive game. However, the Cougars’ performance on the court wasn’t enough to outpace the forces of nature.
On Wednesday afternoon, the 23rd-ranked Cougars were still in Iowa, one day after defeating No. 10 Iowa State 88-85 in a thrilling double-overtime game at Hilton Coliseum. A BYU spokesperson confirmed the team remained in Iowa due to severe weather conditions.
Blizzard conditions and high winds in the Midwest forced the Cougars to stay in Iowa on Wednesday. The Des Moines area had a High Wind Warning that lasted through the day. The National Weather Service lifted the warning around 6 p.m. CST.
Hours before the game on Tuesday, Iowa State University announced partial campus closures on March 5 due to the expected blizzard. Weather reports predicted that the blizzard would start around 11 p.m. CST, right after the game, which had already gone into double overtime and lasted nearly three hours.
BYU’s student section, the ROC, had planned to greet the team at the Provo Airport after their victory. However, the plans were canceled due to the team’s unexpected overnight stay in Iowa.
