The UNC Greensboro baseball team suffered a tough 12-2 defeat at home to the Elon Phoenix on Wednesday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Elon got off to a strong start when Ryan Sprock hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the first. The Phoenix quickly added two more runs, with Vince Fattore’s single up the middle driving in the next two to make it 3-0.
The Phoenix extended their lead in the second inning with two more runs. Alex Duffey hit a bloop single into shallow right field to score Kenny Mallory Jr. and Sprock, putting Elon up 5-0 after two innings.
Elon kept the pressure on in the fourth. Duffey’s second RBI single of the game added two more runs, followed by a two-run double down the left field line from Charlie Granatell to make the score 9-0.
UNCG answered in the bottom of the fourth when Trey Truitt led off with a double and later scored on a single from Branton Jernigan. However, the Spartans still trailed 9-1 after four innings.
The Spartans added another run in the eighth inning. Truitt, with his second hit of the game, reached base and advanced to second on a passed ball. He later scored on another single from Jernigan, cutting Elon’s lead to 9-2.
Elon sealed the win with three more runs in the ninth inning. Tank Yaghoubi’s two-run double and a sacrifice fly by Jackson Alford made the final score 12-2.
Game Notes:
- Truitt and Jernigan led the Spartans with two hits each, with Jernigan driving in both of UNCG’s runs.
- Dylan Smith threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, leading the team with five strikeouts.
- Elon left more runners on base (10) than UNCG (7).
- Elon’s Nolan Straniero picked up the win, while UNCG’s Hunter Shuey took the loss.
