No. 23 Gustavus women’s tennis concluded their spring break trip to Texas with a 7-0 defeat to No. 9 Wash U (Mo.) on Sunday. The Gusties finish their Texas trip with a 3-3 record and now stand at 9-6 overall (2-0 MIAC).
Wash U, ranked No. 9 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), dominated the doubles competition, sweeping all three matches. Gustavus’ No. 12-ranked duo of Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn lost 6-3 to the top-ranked pair of Eleanor Archer and Caitlin Bui at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2, Molly Austin and Lanie Davis were edged 7-5, while Brooke Haddorff and Pavla Yakimova fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Wash U secured victories in all six matches, with five of those wins coming in straight sets. Elvestrom put up a strong fight but lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to Archer in a second-set tiebreaker.
The Gusties will return home to face Luther College (Iowa) on Saturday, March 15, at noon at the Swanson Tennis Center.
