Utah State women’s tennis team narrowly lost to UC Irvine, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon, dropping their spring record to 4-5.
Doubles Action
UC Irvine claimed the doubles point with victories at the first and third positions. The duo of freshmen Natalie Paterova and Maria Paula Ramos Garcia fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, while junior Olivia Halvorsen and sophomore Niyati Kukreti lost 6-4 at No. 1. The match at No. 2 doubles between seniors Indya Nespor and Cielo Tapia-Cruz and UC Irvine’s Carolyna Fowler and Yen Nhi Huynh was left unfinished at 5-5.
Singles Action
Utah State responded strongly in singles, claiming the first two matches. Kukreti triumphed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5, and Nespor followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1. However, UC Irvine bounced back with three consecutive singles victories. Halvorsen was defeated 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, Tapia-Cruz lost 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3, and Paterova fell 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 at No. 4. Ramos Garcia kept the Aggies alive with a thrilling three-set win at No. 6, defeating Bella Pitchford 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8.
