Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has been one of the most vocal athletes in defending her homeland against Russian aggression.
Since the start of the conflict, Svitolina has refused to shake hands with Russian players and has consistently spoken out about the war. She has also visited the front lines multiple times to show her support for those fighting for Ukraine.
During a recent interview with Bild at the Indian Wells tournament, Svitolina shared her deep commitment to her country.
“I would definitely go to war and defend Ukraine,” she said. “But I believe I am more useful in this role than on the battlefield. Over the last three years, I have raised more than 1.5 million euros to help Ukraine, which I think has a greater impact than holding a rifle.”
Svitolina has made several trips to Ukraine, determined to bring hope to her fellow citizens.
“I try to bring at least a little joy into their lives,” she said. “My family is in Odessa, and I have many friends there. The front line is not far away.”
Her husband, French tennis player Gael Monfils, worries every time she visits.
“Gael is always very nervous when I go to Ukraine. Of course, he is scared, but I reassure him that my safety is well taken care of,” Svitolina explained. “I am so grateful for his support because I know this is not easy. I don’t know how many men would truly understand all of this.”
