No. 43 Yale secured a hard-fought 4-0 victory over the Navy men’s tennis team on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Barbara, California. The match was interrupted by rain, which also led to the cancellation of Navy’s second scheduled contest against UC Riverside.
The Midshipmen had a strong opportunity to claim the doubles point. Graydon Buckingham and Zach Quattro gave Navy an early advantage with a 6-3 win over Walker Oberg and Aidan Reilly at No. 3 doubles. However, Yale responded by winning the remaining two doubles matches, both of which were decided by close tiebreakers. Eric Li and Edward Liao edged out J.J. Etterbeek and Herrick Legaspi 7-5 in the No. 2 tiebreaker, while Jim Ji and Jason Shuler held off Luke Garner and Jake Young 8-6 in the No. 1 tiebreaker to secure the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
Yale then extended its lead by winning in straight sets at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, clinching the match before the remaining matches could be completed.
