The St. Mary’s University men’s basketball team is heading back to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional for the first time in a decade. The Rattlers earned an at-large bid and secured the No. 6 seed in the tournament, marking their 10th appearance in school history.
St. Mary’s (19-10) will take on No. 3 seed Lubbock Christian (25-8) in the first round at noon on Saturday, March 15. The game will be played at the Burg Center in Dallas, hosted by top-seeded Dallas Baptist University. The Rattlers previously defeated Lubbock Christian 74-69 on November 23 in Lubbock.
This marks the first postseason meeting between the two teams. The Rattlers hold a 2-9 record in NCAA Tournament games, with both victories coming in 2013. Their previous regional appearances came in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.
The South Central Regional features eight teams competing for a spot in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. If St. Mary’s advances past the first round, they will face the winner of the matchup between No. 2 Colorado School of Mines (27-4) and No. 7 West Texas A&M (19-11) in the semifinals on Sunday, March 16.
