Taipei, March 11 (CNA) – Veteran shuttler Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) has been overtaken by Sung Shuo-yun (宋碩芸) as Taiwan’s top-ranked female badminton player, according to the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released Tuesday.
Tai, 30, dropped six places to No. 25 after losing ranking points due to inactivity. She has been recovering from knee injuries that affected her throughout 2024. In October last year, she applied for a three-month injury-protected ranking before undergoing surgery on her left knee in December.
Despite the ranking change, Tai remains unfazed. Speaking to CNA, she said she “has never paid too much attention” to rankings, as they “always change.” Instead, her focus remains on rehabilitation and recovery.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Sung climbed one spot to No. 19 in the world, making her Taiwan’s highest-ranked female player. She is set to compete in the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships this week, where she will face Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in the first round. If she advances, she is expected to meet world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea in the round of 16.
