Frederik Søgaard and Rasmus Kjær delivered an impressive performance at the All England Open in Birmingham, securing a hard-fought victory over Malaysia’s former world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. The Danish pair triumphed in a gripping three-set match, winning 21-16, 16-21, 21-18 to advance to the second round.
From the start, Søgaard dominated at the net, neutralizing Chia, who is regarded as one of the best net players in the world. His success was largely due to Kjær’s relentless attacking play from the backcourt, which kept the Malaysian defense under pressure.
The Danes took early control, racing to a 17-9 lead in the opening set before the Malaysians responded. However, their comeback effort fell short as Søgaard and Kjær closed out the set comfortably.
The second set saw momentum shift as the Danish duo made a series of unforced errors. Although they stayed close at 13-14, they became too passive in the closing stages, allowing Chia and Soh to level the match.
In the decisive third set, the Danes regrouped, with Kjær displaying remarkable tactical intelligence and technical finesse from the backcourt. They built a 19-13 lead but nearly lost their grip as the Malaysians surged to 18-19. However, Kjær stepped up once again, guiding Denmark to a thrilling victory.
With this impressive win, Søgaard and Kjær move on to the second round, proving they can challenge the world’s best on the biggest stage.
