After a weather delay postponed their Spring Break opener, the George Mason women’s tennis team played its first match of the trip against SIUE on Wednesday at Hilton Head High School.
SIUE dominated the match, winning all three doubles contests to claim the first point. Although several singles matches were closely contested, the Cougars swept all six singles matches, securing a 7-0 victory. With the loss, the Patriots dropped to 3-5 on the season, while SIUE improved to 10-2.
Tight Matches at No. 1 and No. 5 Singles
Two singles matches went down to the wire in third-set tiebreakers. At No. 1 singles, SIUE’s Amelia Gorman edged George Mason’s Cenan Liu in a hard-fought battle, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. At No. 5 singles, Patriots player Lauren Splett won the opening set 6-2, but Stefaniya Anikina responded by taking the second set 6-3 and claiming the tiebreaker 10-8.
Looking Ahead
George Mason will continue its Spring Break trip with two matches on Friday. The Patriots will face Berry College at 9 a.m. before taking on West Virginia State at 5 p.m.
