Junior Kennedy Buntrock has been named the Big West Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time in her career, the conference announced Tuesday.
Buntrock is the first Cal Poly player to receive the award since she last won it on April 25, 2023. The Henderson, Nevada, native delivered strong performances in three matches last week, finishing 2-1 in both singles and doubles play.
In Friday’s dominant 7-0 win at UC Riverside, Buntrock excelled at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. She secured a 6-0 doubles win and followed up with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory in singles. On Saturday, she earned another straight-set singles win in a 5-2 loss to Long Beach State. She capped off the week on Monday with a 6-2 doubles victory alongside partner Romane Mosse in a 4-3 home win over LMU, improving their season record to 6-3.
Buntrock now has 33 career dual doubles victories, tying for 18th in Cal Poly history. She also made program history last year by becoming the fifth Mustang ever to win a set in the NCAA Tournament, taking the second set 6-2 against No. 11 USC while playing at No. 6 singles.
Upcoming Matches
The 56th-ranked Mustangs (10-3, 2-1 Big West) will host two matches this weekend at the Ronca Tennis Center. They face Santa Clara at noon on Saturday, followed by their Big West home opener against CSUN on Sunday at noon.
Saturday’s match will also highlight an important cause, as the team partners with the Nephrotic Syndrome Foundation to host Nephrotic Syndrome Awareness Day. The event will raise awareness for the rare kidney disease, which Cal Poly’s 9-year-old Team Impact member, Brooke Fritz, is currently battling.
