The Navy baseball team earned its first road win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Fordham 11-7 at Houlihan Park in the Bronx, New York. The victory capped off a three-day visit to New York City, where the Midshipmen toured the 9/11 Memorial, MLB Headquarters, and Yankee Stadium.
Freshman pitcher Mikey Plummer delivered a strong performance in his first collegiate start, allowing just one run over 4.2 innings. Offensively, Navy was led by three-hit performances from Jack Killelea and Ty DePerno, while Victor Izquierdo drove in four runs.
Game Breakdown
Navy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Izquierdo worked a bases-loaded walk after an error extended the inning. Brock Murtha added another run in the second with an RBI single, scoring Chris Klug.
The Midshipmen extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Killelea scored on an Izquierdo sacrifice fly, and Evan Brown singled home DePerno. A dominant fourth inning saw Navy add five more runs, highlighted by DePerno’s RBI single, Izquierdo’s two-run double, a balk that scored DePerno, and Klug’s two-run single, making it 9-0.
Fordham responded with an RBI single from Andrew Kanellis in the fourth and an RBI double from Tommy McAndrews in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-2. Navy tacked on two more runs in the seventh, with Henry Mitchell scoring on a passed ball and Izquierdo drawing another bases-loaded walk.
The Rams made a late push, scoring three runs in the seventh, including a two-run homer by Kanellis. They added two more in the eighth, but reliever Landon Kruer shut down the rally by retiring five of the last six batters, sealing Navy’s win.
