The UNC Asheville men’s tennis team came up short in a 4-2 loss to UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, April 8, in a non-conference road match.
The Spartans claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matchups. UNC Greensboro’s pair of John Gabelic and Tymofiy Khryustyuk cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz secured a 6-4 victory at No. 3. Asheville’s No. 2 team, Tarek Erlewein and Olle Sonesson Lidholt, led 5-3 in their match before it was left unfinished.
Despite losing the doubles point, Erlewein and Lidholt delivered strong performances in singles play to earn both of Asheville’s points.
At the top singles spot, Erlewein defeated Khryustyuk 6-3, 6-2. Lidholt followed with a three-set win over Gabelic at No. 2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
However, UNC Greensboro closed out the match by winning at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Luke Thomson beat Cian Ingles 6-3, 6-1, and Andrew Black came from behind to edge Griffin Lovern 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The match at No. 5 singles between Moskowitz and Trevor Gray was left unfinished, with the score tied at one set apiece and 4-4 in the third. The No. 6 singles spot was decided by default in favor of UNC Greensboro.
The Bulldogs now stand at 10-8 overall and 1-1 in Big South Conference play. They will close out the regular season on Friday, April 11, with a match against Longwood. First serve is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Farmville, Virginia.
