Sherida Spitse made history on Tuesday night by becoming the most-capped female footballer in European history. The 34-year-old Dutch midfielder played her 241st match for the Netherlands during their 3-1 win over Austria in the UEFA Nations League.
Spitse surpassed Sweden’s Caroline Seger, who retired in 2023 with 240 international appearances.
She made her debut for the national team back in August 2006, at just 16 years old, in a 4-0 loss to England. Since then, Spitse has been a key figure in Dutch women’s football and became the Netherlands’ all-time most-capped player in 2019.
In Tuesday’s match, the Netherlands earned an important win with goals from Wieke Kaptein, Danielle van de Donk, and Vivianne Miedema. Miedema, who plays for Manchester City, came on as a substitute in the 61st minute but was forced off due to injury just 16 minutes later.
The Netherlands are currently second in their UEFA Nations League group. They have 10 points, the same as group leaders Germany, but trail on goal difference. Germany leads Group 1 of League A with a +12 goal difference, while the Netherlands have +5. Austria sits in third with 3 points, and Scotland is fourth with none.
