Liverpool are growing increasingly confident that Mohamed Salah will sign a contract extension beyond this summer, following positive developments in recent talks. This comes as a boost for the club, with captain Virgil van Dijk also likely to extend his contract past June. Van Dijk confirmed this week that progress has been made regarding his future at Anfield.
Both players have been vital to Liverpool’s success this season, as the club closes in on a record-equalling 20th top-flight title. Salah has netted 27 goals in 31 appearances, while Van Dijk’s solid defense has helped Liverpool concede just 30 goals, placing them 11 points clear of Arsenal with seven games remaining.
Manager Arne Slot has expressed his desire for both Salah and Van Dijk to remain key parts of his plans. Despite both players nearing their mid-30s, Salah turning 33 in June and Van Dijk 34 in July, they have remained injury-free under Slot’s management.
In November, Salah had suggested he was “probably more out than in” at Liverpool after expressing frustration over not receiving a new contract offer, though he made it clear that staying at the club was still his priority. He currently earns a basic salary of £350,000 a week, with talks with his representatives beginning before November, though no formal offer had been made.
While Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017, has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League, he is set to ignore offers from other clubs. Like Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah has been free to negotiate with foreign clubs since January. Of the trio, only Alexander-Arnold is expected to leave, with a move to Real Madrid nearly finalized.
