ISKL student-athletes recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train with Tsuyoshi Nishioka, a celebrated figure in Japanese baseball. Nishioka, who played in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for more than a decade and represented his country in the Olympics and World Baseball Classic, brought his expertise and inspiration to a special baseball clinic.
Held in collaboration with the Under-15 Harimau Club, the event also welcomed players from across the local baseball community. The clinic was made possible through the support of No Boarders Academy, an organization committed to promoting baseball throughout Southeast Asia.
“Training with Tsuyoshi Nishioka was an incredible experience,” said Eliott S. (’26), Co-Captain of ISKL’s Varsity Baseball team. “It was surreal to learn from someone I had looked up to as a kid, since he was a former Minnesota Twins player—a team I’ve supported my whole life. His insights and knowledge of the game really made an impact on me and my teammates.”
Joining Nishioka were former Tokyo Giants player Mr. Shibata and well-known freelance announcer Mr. Tanaka. Together, they shared not only technical knowledge but also the deeper values behind the game—teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
Matthew N. (’26), who had trained with these coaches during the No Boarders Baseball Camp, said, “Their passion for promoting baseball in countries where the sport is still growing was inspiring. I hope to contribute to society in the same way they do.”
The event highlighted the growing enthusiasm for baseball in Southeast Asia and showcased how connections with professionals can leave lasting impressions on young athletes.
