The San Diego State men’s tennis team is heading to Las Vegas to open the Mountain West Championship. The Aztecs will take on No. 3 seed Utah State in a first-round matchup on Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT at the Darling Tennis Center.
San Diego State enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed with an overall record of 9-12 and a 2-4 mark in conference play. In their final match of the regular season, the Aztecs picked up a 4-2 win over Nevada on Saturday.
The Aztecs earned the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. On court three, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Denis Maijorov beat Max Contet and Rayen Hermassi 6-3. Liam Spiers and Marc Kleber sealed the point on court two, winning 6-4 against Remy Tregoures and Greg Valente.
Maijorov added the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Valente on court six. Alexander Mandma followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hammond on court two. Mathieu Josserand clinched the match for SDSU in a tight three-set battle, defeating Hermassi 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on court three.
Utah State comes into the tournament with a 14-8 record and a 4-2 record in conference play. The Aggies recently defeated Air Force 4-1 on Saturday. In their last meeting with San Diego State on Feb. 16, Utah State came out on top with a 4-0 win at home.
Last year, the Aztecs made a strong run in the Mountain West tournament, reaching the final. They upset top-seeded and No. 63-ranked Utah State 4-3 in the semifinals after beating No. 5 seed Nevada 4-1. Their run ended with a 4-1 loss to second-seeded Boise State, ranked No. 57 at the time.
The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to face either No. 2 seed New Mexico or No. 7 seed UNLV at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
