Tennessee junior guard Edie Darby has announced she will medically retire from basketball after two seasons with the Lady Vols. The 5-foot-7 guard played for Tennessee from 2022-24, appearing in 31 games and contributing 35 points, 18 rebounds, 10 assists, and eight steals over her career.
In her announcement, Darby expressed deep gratitude for her basketball journey, saying, “This game has given me so much. It’s shaped me, challenged me and given me opportunities I will never take for granted.” Darby went on to explain that after prayerful consideration and listening to her body, she made the decision to retire, trusting in the Lord’s plan for her next steps.
A native of Greenfield, Tennessee, Darby had a stellar high school career at Greenfield High School. She scored 1,000 career points by her junior season, finishing with 1,603 points. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic halted Greenfield’s perfect 34-0 season in 2020, but Darby’s achievements were no less impressive. She graduated as her high school’s valedictorian in 2022, adding to her list of accolades.
While Darby’s playing career at Tennessee has come to an end, her contributions and leadership will be remembered as a significant part of the Lady Vols’ recent history. Her decision to focus on her health and future plans reflects her deep faith and personal conviction.
