Morocco has achieved another major sporting success. For the seventh year in a row, the African Tennis Confederation has named Morocco the “Best African Tennis Country” for 2025, according to an official statement.
Jean Claude Talon, president of the African Tennis Confederation, had earlier informed Fayçal Laraichi, president of the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation, about the award. The trophy will be officially presented during the closing ceremony of the African Under-14 Team Championships in Cairo, Egypt, which will take place from May 5 to May 10.
“I am honored to inform you that, based on the results recorded in the 2025 African Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 Junior Championships, as well as bonus points from the Under-14 event in late 2024, Morocco has been awarded the Trophy for the Best African Nation of 2025 for the seventh year in a row,” said Talon in the statement.
The Confederation highlighted that Morocco’s focus on developing young players and providing them with strong opportunities played a key role in the award. The outstanding performances of Moroccan athletes aged between 14 and 19 at both continental and global levels were also crucial.
This recognition shows that Morocco’s efforts to promote sporting values among its youth are succeeding. Moroccan players especially excelled in the Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 categories, winning African championships in each.
Since the award was first introduced in 1978, and except for 2020 when it was not given due to the pandemic, only seven countries have claimed the title: South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Madagascar.
South Africa remains the most successful nation with 24 titles. Morocco now follows with 13 titles, strengthening its position as a rising power in African tennis. Morocco’s current run of seven consecutive titles matches South Africa’s streak from 2007 to 2013 and is just one short of South Africa’s record eight straight wins between 1996 and 2003.
Egypt ranks third with five titles, while Nigeria has three. Ivory Coast has won twice, and Senegal (in a shared title with Morocco) and Madagascar each have one victory.
