Lincoln Youth Football kicked off its inaugural girls flag football camp on Sunday at Cook Pavilion, offering an exciting opportunity for young girls to get involved in the fast-growing sport.
The camp, held in partnership with the Lincoln Community Learning Centers, aimed to inspire girls to explore flag football by honing their skills through drills, sprints, and coaching sessions.
Former and current Husker football players, along with members of the Midland University women’s flag football team, helped run the camp. These athletes had recently competed in Memorial Stadium on Friday as part of the Husker Games.
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird attended the event and presented a proclamation declaring April 27th as Girls Flag Football Day in Nebraska.
“It’s exciting to watch these girls come out and see the enthusiasm from all the kids here today,” said Mike Selvage, commissioner of Lincoln Youth Football. “The growing excitement around the sport makes it even more enjoyable.”
The camp comes just weeks ahead of the first season of girls 7-on-7 flag football, which is set to begin on May 13. In recognition of the mayor’s proclamation, Lincoln Youth Football is reducing the registration fee for the league from $135 to $85. The league is open to girls ages 8 to 15. Those interested in joining can sign up through the Lincoln Youth Football League’s website.
